Symptoms of Lyme disease

Lyme disease is easiest to treat early, so book a visit if you think you may have been infected. Many people never remember a tick bite or a rash. Symptoms can show up anywhere in the body, including:

  • Whole body: fatigue, fevers, chills, night sweats and poor sleep

  • Joints and muscles: joint pain or swelling, muscle aches, stiffness and cramps

  • Nerves: tingling, numbness, burning or shooting pain, facial palsy and twitching

  • Head, eyes and ears: headaches, light or sound sensitivity, blurry vision and ringing in the ears

  • Brain and mood: brain fog, poor memory, anxiety, low mood and irritability

  • Heart and lungs: palpitations, chest discomfort and shortness of breath

  • Digestion: nausea, reflux, diarrhea or constipation

Because its symptoms overlap with so many conditions, Lyme is often called the great imitator. Some people are first told they have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or another chronic condition.

Lyme disease testing

Standard Lyme testing in Canada checks for only a few strains, yet more than 20 strains can cause Lyme symptoms. A negative result does not always rule Lyme out.

We offer specialized testing through an accredited European laboratory that looks for a wider range of Borrelia strains, plus common co-infections such as Babesia, Bartonella and other bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. Your doctor will explain which tests fit your case and review the cost with you before you decide. Results usually take two to three weeks.

How we treat Lyme disease

There is no single fix for Lyme. Effective Lyme disease treatment uses several tools together, timed to your stage of illness.

Osteopathic manual therapy

Dr. Anand Amin, M.D.(IMG), DO(MP) uses gentle, hands-on osteopathic techniques to ease joint and muscle pain, calm an overactive nervous system and help your body move again.

Naturopathic medicine

Dr. Aminder Singh, ND and Dr. Sara Korsunsky, ND build a plan that may include anti-inflammatory nutrition, herbal antimicrobials and biofilm support, plus nutraceuticals to protect your nerves and support your gut, liver and kidneys.

IV and injection therapies

When your doctor decides they are suitable after an assessment, IV or injection therapy may be part of your naturopathic plan. Your doctor will discuss which options suit you.

Local hyperthermia

Targeted therapeutic heat applied to painful joints and muscles to boost blood flow and relax tight tissue.

Acupuncture, massage and counselling

Acupuncture with Juyin Lu, R.Ac. and massage therapy with Jennifer Weidemann, RMT ease symptoms and relax your nervous system. Counselling supports you through the emotional weight of a long illness.

Working with your current care

Antibiotics are a common part of Lyme treatment. We ask about every medication you take and build your natural care plan to fit safely alongside it.

What the research shows

Natural medicines are being studied seriously for Lyme disease. Researchers estimate that 10 to 20% of people treated for Lyme continue to have symptoms afterward. In a Johns Hopkins laboratory study, seven botanical extracts, including Japanese knotweed, cat’s claw, sweet wormwood, black walnut and Chinese skullcap, showed good activity against the hard-to-treat, non-growing form of the Lyme bacteria. One herb, Cryptolepis, cleared it completely in the lab, where the antibiotics doxycycline and cefuroxime did not.
